"Go" for launch
Christmas Day 2021 - my wife surprised me with an old Game Boy Colour and an emulator cart forgetting that I already had access to my original Game Boy Colour and that I have every emulator under the sun on my home computer. Regardless it was a very thoughtful present (I am very hard to shop for) and got me playing a bunch of my childhood favourites albeit after I replaced the buttons and screen to make it more usable. Originally I tried just emulating games I had owned, but I slowly found a massive collection of fan created mods and original games, as a game maker myself this got me curious and I stumbled upon GB Studio, I grabbed it and quickly made a funny little scene with a goose picture honking and then promptly forgot about the whole thing until about late 2022.
I've been solo dev'ing in Unity for the past couple of years now and nothing has really stuck, I either get half-way through a project and lose interest or deviate too much from the original idea that the project just isn't fun anymore. Infinioblaster was one of those projects that I just couldn't get to work, as part of a long winded joke to a friend I did think how it would work on Game Boy and this very slowly turned into the game you see now today. I gave myself a few weeks on it as a side project to a side project but it quickly snowballed forcing me to learn how to create sprites (I cannot draw to save my life) and even compose MOD music (I do not have a single musical bone in my body), a few format restrictions and engine bugs did cause a few headaches but it eventually grew into what it is now. The game isn't finished, I need to balance a few things and add more levels but I hope it gives a good retro bullet hell/space fighter wave vibe to those that get to pick it up. If you like this, fantastic, if not then that's fine too - keep checking out the GB Studio games, there are some brilliant projects out there!
For those curious, the dedication at the beginning is to my younger brother Matt who suddenly lost his life earlier this year. I'm glad he was able to try out a really early build of what I was going for, but annoyed he won't get to hear the music I made - he was the musical one of the whole family!
Fun fact: I'm pretty sure this is the first ever Game Boy game that has used AI generated assets. Doing the smaller sprites wasn't too painful but I used Stable Diffusion for both the title screen in game and the cover box art, they turned out pretty well.
